Do a Quick Bike Test- Check your bike and your wheels. Make sure your "Quick release" wheels are properly secured! Avoid Busy Streets- Try to avoid taking the same road you take when you drive your vehicle. Instead take streets with less vehicles and reduced speeds limits. Take the whole lane- It is much softer to take the entire lane Compared to riding close to the right closer to the curb. You have a better chance of cars seeing you if you are in the whole lane vs being close to the curb. This works best if you are able to keep up with traffic perhaps a street with a slower speed limit!
Lights are not the enemy- Light up! Where headlamps the flash continuously so that cars from the opposite side see you. Wear rear reflectors and flashing lights so the vehicles behind you see you. Noise blocking headphones not wise- It is imperative that you are able to hear your surroundings when you are driving and is is equally if not more important when you are cycling. The fewer distractions the better!
